How long have you owned this truck?
Just over 2 years

Is there any unique stories or history behind this truck?
There are about a thousand stories with this truck… Everything from falling off a tow truck, to breaking ball joints while being towed on a flat bed. You name it, its done it. The truck itself started off as a budget build, but while waiting for the bags and four link to show up Corey said, “Lets BD it”, right away I said NO. But after a sleepless night I started to see the light and the rest is history.

Did you consider any other projects before starting this one?
This is the truck I have been looking a long time for. Personally I never knew Mazda made it, I was actually looking for a Ford Courier. Luckily I found this instead.

Who helped you build it?
Corey and Seth

What makes your truck unique from other ones?
Never seeing another one at a show. The B1800 is a rarity, the 1800 engine only came in the Ford Courier and the 1600 in the Mazda. It wasnt untill 77 that Mazda started to put the B1800 and the B2000 in their own trucks. So somehow mine got the bigger engine 4 years before the rest. I have the badges and vehicle identification plate to prove it.

What feature do you like most?
This is a hard one, I like the truck the best… just the over all look I guess.

What don’t you like about it?
Ever try to find parts for a 73 Mazda…?

If there was not limitation on money, what singe modification would you choose?
Find a way to section and BD an engine and still be able to run a stock hood.

What does your friends and family say about this truck?
Surprisingly my father was impressed and even said he was proud of me. Which is nice, unfortunately he lives across this country in Ottawa so we don’t get any father son tinker time. The girlfriend thinks its a money pit. I threatened her with her coming home one day and having a needle in my arm, I said “Gotta pass the time some how, how about a heroin addiction?” She hasn’t said anything since.

Any memorable moments with it?
Every time I drive it a remember something. Like, don’t forget to top off your differential fluid. Its amazing what a pinion looks like when the bearing goes.

What are your future plans for this truck?
As we speak, the truck is getting torn apart. It will be getting a 1 inch stock floor body drop, accompanied with a 2.5 inch roof chop. The stock bench seat will be taken out in favor of a “one off” set of bomber buckets with a bum pad. A 49 Ford dash sits waiting to be narrowed and installed (only time will tell if we get that done). All the running gear will be swapped out for Toyota spindles and a narrowed Toyota rear end. The truck will maintain its “found in a field” look, but the paint color could possibly change, I haven’t completely decided. Upgraded engine and auto transmission. Wood floor bed (old barn wood)… and I’m sure a million more minor things as the truck gets put back together.

How long have you owned this truck? I have owned it for about 8 months. The build took about 6 1/2 months with a 1 month hiccup in the middle of the build. I moved all the way across town while the body was at the paint shop and the frame was in my garage.

Is there any unique stories or history behind this truck? The funny thing about how I bought this truck is that I actually was looking at the wheels before I even bought the truck. My buddy Derek had bought the wheels for his car, but they were a little too big and he was trying to sell them. I told him it would be great if someone bought the wheels and put it on a Mazda like the yellow one that was on the cover of Minitruckin’ way back in the day. He mentioned that I should be the guy, I thought about it for a while and decided to take on the task. As you might tell, I didn’t go for the exact look obviously. I would be pretty uncomfortable in a body dropped standard cab also, so I was on the lookout for an extended cab.

Did you consider any other projects before starting this one? I considered pretty much any mini truck, but I focused mainly on the Mazdas.

Who helped you build it? Andy Day helped me with the interior and the seats were done by Scottie Taylor.

What makes your truck unique from other ones? The only major body modification is the roll pan. I was going for a stock look, just laid out. Also now mostly all trucks are on bags. Bags were never even an option for me. I have always done hydraulics and I wasn’t going to stop at this truck.

What feature do you like most? The hydraulics are the best feature of the truck. I came up with a dual pivot design on the cylinders that I never seen before. This allows for the cylinders to never bind. Which, in turn, makes for no squeaking, or any noise for that fact. It also allowed me to run the cylinders upside down under the bed floor, another setup I have never seen done before.

What don’t you like about it? The motor. I wasn’t really concerned with how slow Mazdas are, so I left the motor relatively stock. If I would have know a couple things about how slow they really are, I probably would have done some work to the motor before I put the truck back together. Maybe next time.

What was your biggest obstacle and how did you overcome it? Paint was definitely the biggest obstacle. I had dropped the truck off at a shop where it sat for a month untouched. I finally got tired of the run around from that shop and went with plan B. A buddy of mine Terry works as a prep guy at a body shop and had sprayed a couple of smaller things, but never a complete vehicle. When I started thinking about pulling the truck from the body shop I approached Terry about painting the truck for me. He was all over it. Terry really came through for me on the paint, it was his first 100% vehicle.

If there was not limitation on money, what singe modification would you choose? A V8 motor and tranny combo that would fit under the hood. Everything else is done just the way I wanted, at least for this truck.

What does your friends and family say about this truck? All my friends in the scene loved the truck. I get praises from people I didn’t even know that I knew. The family is another story, they never really got the minitruckin thing.

Any memorable moments with it? Yeah, for sure. I decided it would be cool to get the truck 100% done for the Forbidden Fantasy show. It made its first show appearance at our show, Bring the Noize. However, I wanted the engine bay cleaned up and the complete interior done, and I didn’t have much time. Actually the last week would be my most memorable time with the truck. My buddy Andy and I worked all week before the Forbidden Fantasy show to get the truck’s interior done. I stopped working on it at 3am the day we left for the show. It was just enough time to load it on the trailer, take a quick shower, stop and get a couple red bulls and hit the road for California at 5am.

What are your future plans for this truck? I plan on taking the truck to any and all the shows in my area. I am thinking until SEMA. Maybe after SEMA I may try to sell it and start the next project. Who knows though…

I was recently asked, “So what is this Techi project on all the scene sites?” Well let me try to give some background and more information about this community project.

Brief History. Right from their website, “Wikipedia is a multilingual, Web-based, free-content encyclopedia project.” A “wiki” is a type of collaborative website and “pedia” just comes from the word encyclopedia. The purpose of a wiki is for a community of users to collaborate together and contribute articles that provide links to guide the user to related pages with additional information. A wiki is edited by anyone in the world and is done by volunteers. Here are a few examples so you can see what a wiki looks like:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truck
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Website

Introduction to the Techi. In our network, we have users that have so much experience and deep desire to help others that we are beginning to develop a community project called the Techi. It is a collaboration that will be unique to each of our websites and will involve all our users. There are 3 levels of contributors to our Techi project: any Website user, Techi Moderator, and Techi Administrator.

Website user - Any registered user on our sites that can post information for the Moderators to review.
Techi Mod - Registered users that have been chosen to review all infromation contributed by the website’s users
Techi Admin - Website Admins will choose the Mods to manage all information and will have the final decision on the organization and infrastructure of the data collected.

Infrastructure. The basic setup will be a new forum section added called “Techi.” In this section, there will be subsections that a user can choose from. Within a subsection, a user can start a new thread or contribute to an existing thread. Then the Mods will collect this information and begin to post under the outline that has been setup by the Admins. You can see a basic outline here for MazdaBscene.com: http://mazdabscene.com/techi/index.html

So keep your eyes peeled, we will be adding this new Forum section soon and hope you can be apart of this community project. The Techi will only be as good as what our users can contribute, so we hope that you can help us out! This will be as simple as finding old/new threads on the site that store the technical information we are looking for. Or maybe you can dig deep into other sources like paper/pdf Manuals or other Internet sources. The Techi’s main purpose is to provide a primary source of information for a “scene site” vehicle make/model for all users or visitors. Keep an eye out, it’s coming soon to a scene site near you…

2008 ha come to a close... Take a look at what has happened in the Your Scene Network and also see what is to come in 2009!

Baha: Welcome everyone, to Ask the Admins?
aj: now that is a great name
Baha: This is our first installment so it is just AJ, and myself. In the future it will be more interactive
aj: i can see us on national television one day right after 60 minutes
Baha: haha
aj: we have been through a lot of changes this past year, I really cant believe its 2009
Baha: me neither it’s been an eventful year
Baha: we had some server issues in June/July that brought down the network temporarily and a total redesign of all the sites before the end of the year
aj: yeah, i remember last year talking about the site upgrades, its crazy that we are actually here
Baha: me neither, I’m so glad I left my previous job, other wise I don’t think it would have happened
aj: hah, not many people can say that
Baha: haha very true
Baha: we don’t make any money, but I think I will always keep this as my job, it is what I enjoy
Baha: We also did our first Ride of the Year Contest and that went really well!
aj: yeah it was a pleasure to chat with Justin and get to know him better
Baha: yeah that was a great interview
aj: and in the future we will be having more featured members and the treasured 2009 Ride of the Year to come
aj: as all the sites grow, we hope to do this same format for all sites for the YourScene network
Baha: if you haven’t had the chance to read it and are reading this please go to this link http://mazdabscene.com/features/2008-ride-of-the-year.html
Baha: I can’t wait to show you the award! They were pretty busy with the holidays but I should have it in a week
aj: yeah, im pretty pumped about that, can i have one too?
Baha: next year I would like to see the sites grow with content, all the useful information to help with member projects
Baha: sure you get the AJ award
aj: ha, i feel special
Baha: haha
aj: before we get into more, just to recap, what all sites do we have updated and online now?
Baha: I’ll go in order of their release date
Baha: we have MazdaBScene.com - RangerScene.com - YotaScene.com - MaxD50Scene.com - DuallyScene.com - S-Scene.com has been changed to S10Scene.com and lastly IsuzuScene.com
Baha: we also added a great Moderator team to help us keep everything running strong!
aj: now were talking!
Baha: in fact one thing we are working on tonight is putting together a list or roles we need for 09! If you would like to join the team email myself of AJ
Baha: we couldn’t run the network without the moderators
aj: so thats 7 websites now back online for the network. What changes do you see now that we have more moderators per site?
Baha: for 2009 I think we will see massive growth, since the moderators help free up time on the forums we can concentrate more on development and expansion
Baha: I would really like to see Your Scene Mag take over as the premier online magazine for truck and car enthusiasts alike!
Baha: It’s amazing how much work you get done when you stop sleeping
aj: I like you man…but you’re crazy! Just to give you guys an idea of the big picture, we are continuing to create a network of truck enthusiast’s sites that will be connecting to one another
Baha: Which models do think we should cover next AJ?
Baha: I think there is more to explore in getting into the Full Size niche
aj: wow, thats a good question. i think we have most of the popular models, but i think there is a lot in the full size niche also
Baha: I really want to make a site for the Nissan hard body guys, they have had a couple sites come and go in the past few years
Baha: It’s hard on the less popular models to keep forums active, but I still would like to get all the information out there and on the network
aj: o yeah, the hard bodies def need a site. But before we grow more, we really want to focus on improving our sites in 2009
Baha: I agree, I think we will have the best infrastructure in our industry
Baha: So when we explode in 2009, no worries, we have the backbone to support it all!
aj: thats right, so lets talk about some features on the sites now that are this back bone
aj: with the upgrade, we really are starting to develop our online magazine feel to the site with the articles you find on MazdaBscene.com
aj: one thing we really want to focus on is trying to highlight the users to our sites. Doing a Featured Member article, or a Ride of the Year allows everyone to see a different side to our members
Baha: Exactly! we do this for you guys, and we have a lot of new additions to help you with your project.
aj: it also gives us a chance to show of what great rides we have on the sites
aj: and what would these new additions be Rob?
Baha: My favorite feature is the interviews; it is interesting to learn the background behind the ride. I would like to go back to the online magazine feel.
Baha: For the longest time, our sites have for the most part only had content that was with in the forums. For the website to grow, this was a big limiting factor, so now if you notice each one in the network resembles an online magazine with rotating content.
Baha: With this format, we can highlight interesting articles that pertain strictly to your make/model, most likely the reason you are visiting the site! We will also be streaming related content from Your Scene Mag such as video/pictorial show coverage and features!
aj: which I am pumped about, this is really going to keep on growing
Baha: I’m excited to, I almost want to talk about the new addition at the end of year 2009 but it has to wait
Baha: If you want a hint find the meaning behind the Slovak word Edecia
Baha: this is a pretty good recap, how do you think this will work with members being involved next year?
aj: well we are going to bringing more opportunities for our members to get involved with the success of the site
Baha: We are going to have a pretty big team!
aj: we will be having more member votes on Featured Members, and we need everyone’s help to contributing to our Techi
aj: this is a great opportunity to really house information about the specific truck that you work on day in and day out on, and will help other members research and learn more
Baha: Yeah the Techi is something we can all contribute to and benefit from. We really need help from the members for it to truly be successful
Baha: I think once we have a dedicated person for each one, we will really see it come together
Baha: The outlines we started are the first step
aj: so you heard it here guys, this could be you
Baha: Let’s see those resumes!
aj: there are threads started for you guys to contribute your articles and ideas for the Techi, please post them there
Baha: Are you ready for the questions?
aj: yeah man, so you guys contributed some questions about what you wanted to ask us. I will post the question and we will answer…
Baha: All right let’s see what we got.
aj: First up…Are we ever going to have the T-Shirt Design Contest, where Members throw out there designs and we vote and get it made?
aj: additionally to that, lets just talk about apparel for the sites in general
Baha: The popular T-shirt contest question lol
Baha: Sure, the answer is yes.
Baha: Some of you may not know but I started the company Ground Smack and the end of this year to make shirts for the Your Scene Network sites
Baha: Also, I’m not a big fan of shirts with catch phrases, and I haven’t seen an alternative clothing supplier so I decided to fill the need. I’m sure I’m not alone in disliking the catch phrase shirts; I just couldn’t wear them anywhere.
aj: got milk?
Baha: The next shirts to be printed will be Yota Scene, we have some designs but they aren’t ready for print yet.
Baha: Worse, more like I Like to get laid…Pssst I have bags
Baha: Reminds me of middle school, No Fear anyone?
aj: hah, yeah. So what are your thoughts on other apparel also? I know guys have asked for hoodies and beanies maybe?
Baha: Definitely! We are getting our own press soon, we will be offering a full line of T-Shirts, Sweat Shirts, Beanies, Hoodies, and hopefully jeans, and pants. We will also provide clothing for the ladies!
Baha: I forgot to mention flex fit hats as well.
aj: now that sounds like a full line of gear if I ever heard of one
Baha: We’ll sponsor your wardrobe.
Baha: I think polos would be popular to.
aj: ew, classy
aj: Next question… What about special features for supporting members? Such as extra sections or something?
Baha: I need ideas from members also on this.
Baha: I can only think of stickers, discounts on parts, and supplies, and supporter only contests.
aj: thats a good thought, I know we have talked about more features in the online garage
aj: which by the way is soon to be updated…right?
Baha: I suppose that is more then most sites offer, because they just allow you to upload more pictures or see their technical information
Baha: Right, the amount of work that went into the garage is a lot.
Baha: It was rebuilt from the ground up, using open source software as a base.
Baha: The garage is the next section to be upgraded!
Baha: There won’t be a limit to how many vehicles you can include now.
Baha: I don’t want anyone to have to donate money to get the features they need out of the site, I would rather the member WANT to contribute to the site because they appreciate it.
aj: so as Rob said, we have some ideas for benefits for Supporting Members, but please let us know your ideas also, we would love to make this better for those who really want to see the site offer new features
aj: The next questions are specific to the forums for the most part…
Baha: Shoot!
aj: Is there a way to get a “New Post” button or a “Last Post Read” for threads….?
Baha: That question I honestly didn’t understand.
Baha: Did you understand it? There is already a post reply button.
aj: hah, I think they may be asking to jump to the latest post. that is upgraded in the new layout
Baha: Oh, that makes sense.
Baha: AJ is correct when you click on a thread that is listed in the Hot Topics section of the forum; it automatically takes you to the last post in the thread!
Baha: There are so many added features with the upgrade I can’t remember them all.
aj: Also, when you are looking at the Forum Index, the right column displays the most recent post. There is a little icon next to the username. Click that to go to the most recent post
Baha: Wow thanks AJ I never even knew that one!
aj: Next… Can you add a view all button to threads to see all posts on one page?
Baha: I think we need to make a users guide to the site
Baha: I think that would be a useful addition, just if you do that to a thread that has a lot of pictures it will take awhile to load.
Baha: What do you think AJ?
aj: Yeah i think it could take a long time to load, but some one knows full well when they click on “View all Posts” that it will take a while to load
Baha: Good point, or at least I hope they do haha
aj: i think it would be a good feature to add
Baha: Okay, I’ll add it to the development list.
Baha: I can’t wait until I can devote all of my time to development
aj: Which brings us to our last question… Is there a reason why Dually Scene is the slowest website since the creation of the interweb?
Baha: Haha the interweb.
aj: is that a real word? ha
Baha: That is a good question.
Baha: I think so, this answer will sound as if it’s in geek terms.
Baha: Currently the sites are using shared hosting, this allows us to keep costs down, but the sites have gone beyond the capacity of that service.
Baha: So what I’m working on now is a real network infrastructure, I can’t say when it will be up but I want to do extensive testing to ensure the sites will never go down.
Baha: I have two servers already, and will be adding more.
Baha: So short answer, yes there is, but it won’t be slow for long!
aj: so thats the extent of the questions, was there anything else you want to chat about?
Baha: I think we covered everything!
Baha: That was too easy, I’m sure next year will be harder.
aj: haha, yeah I think a lot will change in 2009 and I cant wait!
Baha: Me neither! So do you want to do the closing?
aj: to everyone reading this, we continue to do improve these sites because we really want to bring you a network of websites that are unlike anything else you will find on the “interweb”
Baha: You like that word don’t you!
aj: so as we continue to improve, please email or PM us with ideas or feedback
Baha: Take care all, Happy New Year
aj: oh i love that word, it will be my word for the week. haha!
aj: Happy New Years everyone!!!

aj: u hear now?
justin: is this working
justin: there we go lol
aj: so have you been out to Carlisle ATN?
justin: along time ago, when it was a lot different
aj: yeah I havent been there in a few yrs, the last one I went to they tried doing more MTing events, they had a drag show which was ok
aj: what did u think of it?
justin: I really liked it, it was when I really first started getting into mintruckin and was just enlightened
justin: I bought my truck along time ago, and it was a juiced hopper but still daily
aj: yeah, I think its just hard up here, MTing isnt as big as further east into NJ
justin: true
aj: ha, so you dont drive the truck daily now?
justin: I have a suv
justin: if I have spare money it goes towards my one and only
aj: cool, so what made you buy the mazda?
justin: well growing up ive always loved low riders, especially 64 impalas, then in my town I seen a mazda lowered but nothing else, and fell in love with it
justin: seen potential for a lot of subs and driving low
justin: so I said one day il get a mazda
justin: then I seen a mazda juiced for sale and went and bought it
aj: so whats the MTing scene like in Reading?
justin: there isnt any, maybe a couple but no big clubs or anything
aj: does that make it harder to stay into it, or do you like the rare-ity of it?
justin: I actually was in a couple low rider clubs, but when I went to my first minitruck show, I think the following week I stripped truck back to fasctory and started buying stuff
aj: ?
justin: honestly, I’ve went 20 hours away to shows, just me and my wife because I love custom vehicles
aj: wow thats wild
justin: I just love mazdas though, i dont know if its the seen cause I really dont care about competing and having the newest stuff out there
aj: so does your wife support you in this venture you pursue?
justin: I love just meeting new people and hanging with minitruckers
justin: she didnt at first, it grew on her after she met some of my friends from groundscrapers in new hampshire, now she wants her own
justin: and her first show she started to understand the love I have for my truck and custom vehicles and that it wasnt only me
aj: so when did u move from NH and what was going on at groundscapers?
justin: well I joined groundscrapers a while ago and one of my friends runs the pa chapter, i kinda got outta the whole club thing, but I met some cool people from new hampshire and been to a bunch of shows with them, they come down here for my wedding and all very cool people
justin: they inspire me a lil and keep me going, one particular guy is dan mayhew he has been a good friend and seems all of them guys can build some cool stuff
aj: yeah I think its important to surround yourself with people they can do that, keep you going and help you out when you need it
justin: we have a lot in common, and since I dont have many people around here if I ever need help I just call him if I have a question and there always there
aj: so now that your truck is built do you work on it much?
justin: I do kinda, I’ve had a real bad 2 years
justin: in the past 10 months I’ve got more done than past 4 years
justin: 2 years ago my house burned down
aj: wow
justin: last year I fell and broke some disks in back, torn muscles, and got nerve damage due to a fall
justin: I used to have a stereo shop and a guy I had working for me was selling wheels and keeping money behind my back so it put me in a bind and tried and tried to keep my business going but to much for nothing
justin: working 6-7 a week to work off a debt and be in debt at home wasnt worth the headaches you know, and not spending time with my family
justin: sorry for venting man
justin: I guess you’ll see the real me lol, just I put 100% into everything I have and do, and wanna be know for my work and be the best at something and every time when I feel im ahead a step, i have to take 3 back
aj: sounds like you really have had a lot to go through the past few yrs. its great to hear about your passions though, does all of these experiences really fuel your desires and MTing is really your outlet?
justin: ive always tried my hardest at everything, always tried to be different and mintrucking inspires me to be better at something, but also stay on top of my game
justin: its just building stuff ive always been a audio designer, fiber-glassing and building unique installs, just never the cliental nor location I live will better that
justin: now I build stuff on here for my mazdas and have people all over country knowing my work and seeing my creativity
justin: I want to move to pitt so open a new shop, and live closer to my favorite football team lol and maybe have a better opportunity
aj: hah that would be awesome… Go Steelers!
aj: so u have a daily suv, whats your daily job?
justin: I build kick panels, door panels, dashes, consoles on MBS
justin: I technically allowed to work, but I have to keep occupied and what else, glassin stuff
justin: sosa’s fiberglass creations
aj: o ok, so that fall put you on disability im guessing?
justin: it did but im not recieving money
justin: or ssi
justin: I could be in alaska and ill glass a snow sled for a eskimo lol
justin: might take awhile to dry though lol
justin: ive worked on so much stuff I never get time to work on my own, I used to have a 15 car garage now I have one that would barely fit my truck, so I have it covered up outside so I can still do work for income
justin: its either or truck in garage or money in bank ?
aj: haha, I would think so too. So you kind of a stay at home dad too?
justin: yeah im mrs doubtfire, my wife works in nursing, since my accident she works almost 100 hours of overtime in 2 weeks since January I cook and straighten up and my daughter helps clean lol
justin: and I get up every morning and cook for my lil boy, put him on bus everyday
justin: help with school work you name it lol
aj: thats awesome, I think most dudes deny being an at home dad, but I think it would be sweet
justin: im not ashamed though, im the dad I never had
aj: dude thats awesome to hear
justin: its tough mentally, and knowing wife is bread winner right now but, if I can be a good dad, knowing im trying is all I can do
justin: so that why its hard to work on my truck a lot plus therapy 3 x a week
aj: how old are your kids?
justin: 5 yr old boy jayden and 13 tomorrow daughter brittany
justin: he keeps me on my toes lmao
aj: haha, I would think so.
justin: my friend sparky helps me out a lot with work around here, when I cant hes been a good friend
aj: so how did you stumble upon MBS?
justin: my freind d’ro that just joined, had told me about it back in sept so I joined and realized that this site was really cool, and met a lot of cool people
justin: once your on here on chat you tend to understand people personally and I realize a lot of people enjoy there minis because its theirs, it a hobby that they can get away in the garage and leave everything behind
aj: yeah I feel ya there
aj: well man, its been a pleasure chatting but I think I got enough content. is there anything else you want to say?
justin: working on minis isnt just a hobby its like a part of daily life, just getting a new part is like xmas every time its like the only thing you can do alone and not get bored
justin: I want to say thank you, and thank all the guys on MBS thats about it
